Rafael dos Anjos vs. Kevin Lee: Fight Preview & Prediction
RDA vs Kevin Lee
Rafael Dos Anjos and Kevin Lee will meet in the main event tonight at UFC Rochester and a loss could see Dos Anjos fall out of favour in the division or see Lee fail at rejuvenating his career at a higher weight class.
Lee will be looking to pull off the feat that Dos Anjos did so well two years ago by moving from lightweight to welterweight, a move that has favoured many fighters in the past including RDA who enjoyed a three fight win streak after making the jump including a win over former champion Robbie Lawler.
The move up for Lee comes after a mixed record at lightweight losing two of his last three fights. Dos Anjos shares a similar record losing his last two fights to current champion Usman and interim champion Covington who both figured out the formula to beat the Brazilian: Relentless pressure, strong wrestling and cardio.
Coming up from Lightweight, Lee doesn’t have the size advantage that Usman and Covington had, he also hasn’t proved that he is durable enough to go the distance in a 5-round fight. However, moving up to Welterweight we could see a new and improved Lee, fighting at a more natural weight which could have a positive effect on his conditioning.
If the fight stays on the feet it could be a long night for Lee, Dos Anjos has the superior striking and Lee has shown plenty of holes in his defence in the past. Dos Anjos has good take down defence and over a 25 minute fight you can’t see Lee keeping it on the ground for long. Dos Anjos has gone the full five rounds in four out of his last six fights which could be crucial to him having the upper hand in this fight.
If Lee is able to keep Dos Anjos on his back and keep the pressure on him from buzzer to buzzer he could be in with a shot, a loss today could really see him fall out of favour with the UFC and may raise some question marks about his future. But if the same Lee turns up that we’ve seen in his most recent fights, I can see Dos Anjos getting a decision win.
