Rory’s Racing Rundown 02/09/2017

This Saturday’s racing has got me yearning for the jumps to return. We are now in September and next month we will see the return of some big meetings. But for now, its Sandown and Chester that take my full attention.

Masar the obvious choice in Sandown 2:25

Sandown hosts two Group Three’s on Saturday the first of which is the Solario Stakes at 2:25. The obvious starting point seems to be the 2/1 shot Masar. Whilst there are several in the field with untapped potential he appears to be the one to beat.

He started his career with a win at Newbury before going on to place at Royal Ascot. That form at Ascot has since been franked with the second horse Nyaleti going on to record wins and also running creditable in a Group One.

Masar was giving the two horses that beat him weight due to their filly’s allowance so his performance could be marked up when seeing just how good those horses look. I believe he will take all the beating on Saturday and whilst he isn’t a stand out price he is one that can get any multiple bets off to a flying start.

Unexposed three-year-old could be value in Chester 2:10

I am taking the Hugo Palmer trained Apphia to win the one mile five-furlong handicap. This unexposed daughter of High Chaparral could have plenty more to offer in a first time handicap. At odds of 16/1 she is very appealing.

There are plenty of reasons to expect a big performance from this horse. She only made her racecourse debut in April and has only made five starts. Three-year-old fillies really can improve at a rate of knots and we could see that on Saturday.

For her first appearance in a handicap she will be sporting first time cheek pieces which could help to spark improvement. She has been known to race a little keenly and these could help her settle. This combined with the configuration of Chester should also help her to stay the extended trip.

On her best form, she would have a serious chance. Her single best piece of form is a four length defeat to Coronet at Royal Ascot. Since then she has run with credit in two listed races. I am happy to back this horse at the prices and expect a big run. This is also a rare time where a horse will be tipped each way.

In summary:

Chester 2:10 – Apphia E/W 16/1

Sandown 2:25 – Masar win 2/1
