Rory's Racing Rundown: 23/08/2017
York’s Ebor Festival takes centre stage this week and I am back with a midweek article to preview Day One of the meeting. With one of the year’s top races taking place in the form of the Juddmonte International Stakes the temptation to get behind one of the challengers is too great to resist.
Shutter Speed the value for team Juddmonte in their own race
Shutter Speed is owned by Wednesday’s big race sponsors Juddmonte. She runs in the colours of Prince Khalid Abdullah and is looking to score another big race success for trainer John Gosden and jockey Frankie Dettori. As a three-year-old filly she will get all the allowances from her rivals and at odds of 10/1 I am backing her to take advantage.
There are many reasons why I fancy her to run a huge race, firstly it should be remembered she beat subsequent dual Oaks winner Enable with a fair deal of ease at Newbury in April. She looked the real deal there before coming to York and winning the Musidora.
Nothing really went in her favour in the Musidora but she still managed to win. The ground was terribly soft, she pulled early and got no cover in the home straight before hitting the front sooner than ideal and still never looked like getting beat.
She then went on to the French Oaks and was as short as 2/1 in the betting. Much has been made of that seemingly disappointing performance but I think she is much better than she showed there. She looked the winner two furlongs from home before fading into fourth. Trainer John Gosden believes Frankie’s injured shoulder didn’t help her in the finish and believed she should have been closer.
The French Oaks was a very rough race and whilst she managed to avoid most of the trouble it did mean she was trapped very wide. She was coming off a fairly hard race in the Musidora and may be seen to better effect coming back off a slight break. I feel she is plenty big enough at the prices and willing to take a chance.
Course form could pay off for Thesme in opening race
Thesme has some fantastic form at York and I believe she could be about to record another good performance on Wednesday. Her form at York reads 1-1-3-3-5. That is very impressive form. Whilst she has not been in top form lately a return to York could ignite a bounce back.
She runs off an official mark of 100 tomorrow which has been dropping over the last few months. At this meeting last year, she recorded a very creditable fifth in the Group One Nunthorpe. A repeat of a performance like that would see her go very close.
She is drawn low and has Dettori booked so there is plenty going in her favour at odds of 11/1.
York 1.55 Thesme win 11/1
York 3.35 Shutter Speed 10/1
